With the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow soon to kick off, I am delighted to bring you the one hundred per cent official, fully playground endorsed points and ranking system for eight person athletics races. On your marks, get set, go!

• First the worst
• Second the best
• Third the one with the hairy chest
• Fourth’s the golden eagle
• Fifth the witch, digging a ditch, eating bread and treacle
• Sixth the cow
• Seventh the horse
• Eighth got caught by Inspector Morse.

Let’s hope the gallant English and Scottish athletes can avoid Inspector Morse’s clutches. Presumably he’s not in the jag.
