Another quiz question is due, and I am the one to serve it up to you. But first I have to bring you the answer from last week, and I’m sorry to say that contrary to assurances, it is another bit of a mess.
If you can bear to face it, highlight the empty space below to see what the answer is, or might be. (If not, feel free to skip to the next visible paragraph.)
I asked what the first UK number one hit was that was credited to a band featuring an artist. I thought of this question when reflecting on the number of feat. credits in the chart at the moment - there are 15 in the current top 40, including two for the inexplicable pop-up rapper Pitbull. So I thought, here is a trend that started with the dance acts of the late 80s and early 90s - I wonder which band of pioneers was the first to go overground and get a number 1. And as it turns out, the first of them was Soul II Soul feat Caron Wheeler with Back To Life in 1989. That’s the answer I was looking for.
But it turns out that the feat. credit wasn’t something that dance people invented, but rather something they readopted from the older tradition where a band, say Acker Bilk’s band, would have a featured singer performing with them. Inevitably, therefore, I am wrong and there was one credit along those lines in the 1950s that got to number one, nameley Why Do Fools Fall In Love by The Teenagers feat Frankie Lymon in 1956. Additionally, and just to spite me 54 years later, they then changed their credit to Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers for all subsequent hits.
Phew. I’m pleased to say that we’re on more innocent territory for this week’s question, which is simply:
Which of these isn’t a Pokemon? Ganger, Torterra, Grimlock, Psyduck, Mew.
Correct answer next week, without fail (though it may be Wednesday not Tuesday).
