Jay-Z agrees with what I was saying a while ago, that rap is poetry. In fact, he seems very keen to make the point: he says it in these extracts from his book, and he says it more than once in the accompanying interview.

He also has a splendid definition of what poetry is: “A poet’s mission is to make words do more work than they normally do.”

I am wondering whether other rappers agree with him - whether they all consider themselves poets. It would be interesting to do a survey; I’m almost considering signing up to Twitter so that I can try to ask them all. Maybe I will do that.
