The more I think about it, the more I come to find a top ten to be an unsatisfactory way of listing the best of anything. Ten is too many - a list of ten pretends to be definitive, but of course it can’t be. Or if it’s personal, can you really claim a strong personal liking for ten different examples of the same thing? Rarely. Far better, in my view, to work in top fives. These make no false claims: they are evidently no more than a list of personal likes; and nothing can seriously complain about being omitted when there are only five slots. A top five is a thing of modest beauty, like a heart-shaped coffee spoon or a well-kept lawn.
