The rundown

14 Aug 10 | Re: Listings

The more I think about it, the more I come to find a top ten to be an unsatisfactory way of listing the best of anything. Ten is too many - a list of ten pretends to be definitive, but of course it can’t be. Or if it’s personal, can you really claim a strong personal liking for ten different examples of the same thing? Rarely. Far better, in my view, to work in top fives. These make no false claims: they are evidently no more than a list of personal likes; and nothing can seriously complain about being omitted when there are only five slots. A top five is a thing of modest beauty, like a heart-shaped coffee spoon or a well-kept lawn.

Here, then, are some of my own personal top fives.

Top five pies:

  1. Apple pie
  2. Shepherd’s pie
  3. Steak and kidney pie
  4. Pork pie
  5. Steak and ale pie

Top five quotes from Kath and Kim:

  1. Horatio Hornbag, more like
  2. Apart from my hair, what have I got going for me?
  3. That’s nice, it’s different, it’s unusual
  4. A little statue of baby cheeses
  5. I didn’t have any vinegar, so I’m using chutney

Top five flowers:

  1. Fresias
  2. Blossom
  3. Stock
  4. Roses
  5. Snowdrops

Top five Nelly Furtado songs:

  1. Try
  2. Promiscuous
  3. You
  4. Saturdays
  5. I’m Like A Bird
