Newcastle United fans can breathe out. Argentina’s Geordie-influenced strategy of combining the roles of manager and mascot has been found wanting in its first major test, as Maradona has suffered the triple ignominy of seeing his team comprehensively outplayed, losing by a worse scoreline than England, and being described as “just a fan in a suit” by commentary box hate figure Mark “Lawro” Lawrenson.
And in Newcastle upon Tyne former club directors are wondering how, if a stone cold legend and tantamount magician like Diego Maradona can’t summon up a fairytale in a World Cup, they ever thought Kevin Keegan or Alan Shearer would be able to distort the laws of footballing reality in the Premier League. With World Cup winning captain turned World Cup losing coach Dunga also in the doghouse, perhaps this is the end of the line for barmy appoint-and-hope boardroom decisions the world over.
PS: Broadsheet journalists: Please stop referring to the national teams of Brazil, Germany and Spain as the Seleção, Nationalmannschaft and Selección. Those aren’t cool nicknames like Bafana Bafana, they’re just the words for ‘national team’ in those languages. Stop posing!
